January Newsletter

Hello,

Here we go, 2011!  Our family wishes you all a healthy and Happy New Year.  Here’s the latest.

News:

Trent Jeffcoat and I have enjoyed working with the students in Vanderbilt’s Next Step.   Together we wrote a song about their college experience and what it means to become an adult.  Now we have some rehearsing to do.  The song will be presented at the Schermerhorn in April, as part of the VSA Arts program.

Thanks:

Communication is something many of us take for granted.  I know I did until autism took away our  daughter’s ability to tell us her basic wants and needs.  A few years back we purchased a speech generating  device.  With time and lots of training, Morgan’s communication skills grew.   Now she is speaking in sentences!  The down side is that these devices are extremely expensive, putting them out of reach for so many who need them.  It was a major battle for us to make this happen for Morgan.   Without the help of some angels, it would not have been possible for us.

The good news is that the IPad & IPhone are now including communications apps, making them a communication device for a fraction of the cost.  Morgan has moved on to the IPad, and she LOVES it.  I don’t have the words to tell you how much it has meant to our family to have Morgan be able to communicate with us.   I’m even more thankful to know these new devices will open that same door for many more families.

In this ASMT workshop, Ms. Marylee Perkins will highlight the iPad, iPhone, and Dynavox technology systems. Mrs. Tammy Vice will speak to how her daughter, Morgan, uses her iPad and how it compares to her previous Dynavox device.

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes all methods (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, and ideas. People with severe speech or language delays rely on AAC to communicate with the people around them. Electronic devices and their applications (a form of AAC) help people to express themselves, increasing social interaction, school performance, and feelings of self-worth.
